the interlocking technique is an adaptation of the traditional japanese wood joinery technique called jigoku-gumi (literally, “interlocking hell”). cnc machines will create these notches, making the project both financially feasible and technologically accessible.
these diagrams demonstrate how the members come together to create a self-supporting structure that emulates the sophistication of our natural habitat. the top tier both facilitates the vertical growth of plants and the nesting of the birds, a tree of trees in many ways.

the counterforce lab is an initiative by professor rebeca méndez. it is a research and fieldwork studio based in the design media arts department at ucla, dedicated to using art and design to develop creative collaborations, new fields of study, and methods to research, create, and execute projects that investigate and mitigate the social and ecological concerns of the anthropocene era, a time when human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.
